Origin Story
From spray cans to sample packs: the short version, in order.
Born and raised in Los Angeles. Grew up around graffiti, street art and the visual energy the city radiates. Before there was a camera or a DAW, there were walls and spray cans. Asmek was my tag.
Studied Visual Media Arts and Marketing at Emerson College in Boston. Street art grew into something more deliberate: shaping identity, communicating visually, building things that mean something. Boston still shows up all over the gallery.
The first beat. Ableton had been sitting on my machine for a while. A friend tried teaching me dubstep and nothing clicked; then my cousin sat down with me over hip-hop and everything did. I've made something every day since: — days and counting.
Fear and Loathing in Los Angeles. A demo EP with my cousin Bojangles, and I made the cover art. That's when I knew this wasn't a phase.
Spectral Spaceships. A space-themed single with Bojangles, mixed to v4 before I let it go: the most finished thing I've made.
The PlayLab. Everything I've learned turned into 24 free, hands-on music labs, so the next person gets started faster than I did.
Beat Rush live three mornings a week, single-player worlds on the Steam Deck, the camera when the light is right. Next up: heavier sound design and dubstep with Nonverbal.
The Name
Asmek was my graffiti tag. When I started thinking about a digital identity, I asked myself "Why Asmek?" and the question stuck. Now the name is the answer to "Why are you doing this?" The short version: creative work pushes me past my own expectations, and I like where it takes me.
